Swimworld 2009

What was the BEST part of the Swimworld in 2009?

Gali the world champs in Rome.. (MP's 100 Fly) and of course BERLIN!!!! woohooo ;)

Ana all things Indy :)

Nikki Those [Indy] vids make me cry cause I miss it and then cry of laughter cause they are hilarious!!!

Amber It's hands down Indy for me. So much happened and it was amazing seeing it all live. It was the best week of 2009.If anyone gets the chance to see a swim meet esp Nats...DO IT! You won't regret it. :)

Terri Of course the suit wars AND that the nationals was actually televised this year! Short course AND long course! Wish would be that this woudl continue as swimming needs more support

Vicki [Michael Phelps] performance at Roma 09 in the 100m Butterfly was for me his single greatest performance in an individual event that I have ever seen. It had everything, including; controversy (the suits), drama (the rematch of the 1/100th race from Beijing) and smack talk from Cavic. The actual race was even more exciting then I had imagined and did not disappoint. MP wearing and inferior suit, came from behind to break the 50 sec barrier in the 100 fly beating his arch rival Cavic by an impressive 0.13 sec., WOW!

"Gold Medal" Mel Stewart (Gold Medal Swimmer '92)
Biggest moment of 09 ??? Lochte's overall performance at Worlds. For him, since his 2 medals at the 04 Olympics, it's been a slow march toward stardom. Consider that he's competing in an era with Phelps and Peirsol, and you have to admire his diligence. Most mortal men would've given up. Not Lochte. I also admire him because he's never changed. Lochte's still a friend and fan of his competitors.

Best Part about swimming in 2009... Has to be the number of World Records broken... Sure the suits might have had something to do with it... But wow did swimmers step it up and rewrite the record books... Just about everytime the elite swimmers of the world got together, somebody swam crazy fast. It was awesome to watch!

Penn Aquatics
The best part was Aaron Piersol's sick 1st place backstroke heat at FINA ROMA 2009 (AWESOME SWIM).....The worst part??????? FINA's mismanagement of the fast suit controversy........And then banning them......Pitiful..

David Arluck (Swimming Agent Extraordianire, Arluck Promotions)
Race between Cavic and Phelps at World Championships. Absolutely fabulous that the international media took notice of this great rivalry. CNN posted the results as the top story on it’s homepage for several hours. That’s a big deal – especially three years out from the Olympics... Even if I wish the other guy won. Cesar Cielo has demonstrated himself as the dominant male sprinter – head and shoulders above his current competition. Nathan Adrian will be the next guy to challenge him in 2011 and 2012. Double win (50 & 100) at world championships is huge. Pelegrini winning gold medal in Rome and seeing the hometown crowd respond to her. It was exciting and emotional. Very cool.

Rowdy Gaines (You know, '1/100 of a second!!!!' And Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer '84)
It was when Kasey Carlson won the bronze medal in the 100 breast at the World Championships in Rome. The joy and thrill on her face was so genuine and it reminded me of when I won the silver at Worlds in 1978 on my first international trip and besides winning the 100 free in the Olympics in 1984 it was the biggest thrill I ever had in swimming. I saw that same look on Kasey's face. Michael's 100 fly against Cavic was a close second.

Brandon Franklin (NBC Universal)
1. 43 records broken at Worlds. Clearly that with the Swim Suit technology and related issue are the top of the list without question.

2. Phelps / Cavic showdown was huge. I think it is a much bigger deal that Phelps and Cavic went under 50.00 in the 100 fly than the world seems to be making it. Although Rowdy Gaines best 100 Free was 49.36, he won gold in LA in 1984 going a 49.80 which was only .02 faster than what Phelps went. I think it is huge.

The Biedermann upset in the 200 Free was a big deal. He also broke Thorpe's 400m Free record by only .01. Kinda puts Thorpe's record into context..that is what it took to break it.

Freddie Bousquet's 50 Free at French Nationals of 20.94 is amazing.

Sarah Sjoestrom (sp) at 15 went a 56.0 in the 100 fly and broke the world record. Huge.
Dana Vollmer. Great year, Swam well, and sat at my table at the Golden goggles.
Mary Decensza's 200 Fly in prelims at Worlds when she broken the world record was cool. Ariana Kukors in the 200 IM. Kept getting faster and had the true grit guts in the finals. Elizabeth Pelton qualifying for Worlds in several events at the young age of 14. Awesome.

Mel Stewart and Chris Labianco attending all key meets and ensuring the swimming community receives their recap of events! [PPP got a shoutout on one :D]
Robin I'd say my favorite part was attending Charlotte UltraSwim with my two young children (both beginning swimmers). The races were good, it was the big Return O' Michael Phelps, and the low-key atmosphere and bleachers right down to the deck made it possible for us to meet so many great swimmers in person. My shy little girl really blossomed after her idols like Peirsol, Lochte, Phelps and Hoff talked to her like they were just regular folks, and it made her want to swim competitively even more than before. That Grand Prix was proof that our elite swimmers are the kindest pro athletes you'll ever meet.
